The Basics of Poker
Poker is a card game played by a group of people sitting around a table and betting on their hand. The goal is to have the highest ranked hand when all the betting intervals are over, and win the pot, which is all the chips placed into the center of the table during that hand. The game is largely a matter of chance, but there is a significant amount of skill involved in minimizing losses with poor hands and increasing wins with good ones.
The game is usually played from a standard pack of 52 cards; some variant games use multiple packs or add jokers. Cards are ranked (from high to low) Ace, King, Queen, Jack and 10, and suits are spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs. Some games also have wild cards that can take the rank of any other suit.
A round of betting begins after each player receives their two hole cards. The first bet is typically a forced contribution, called an ante or blind bet, made by the players to the left of the dealer.
A player may call the bet, raise it or fold. If a player raises or folds, their remaining chips are placed into the pot and their hand is revealed. The player with the best hand according to the specific poker variant being played takes the pot. If no one has a good hand, the pot is split among all players who remain in the game.
