Getting Started With Poker

Poker

Poker is a card game, played with a standard 52-card deck. Players compete to make the best poker hand from the five cards they are dealt and five cards they must discard from their hands. The highest-ranked hand wins the pot.

Getting Started

The first step in any poker game is to deal cards. Each player is dealt one card face down, and one card face up. The cards are then shuffled and passed to the next player.

Betting begins with the first bettor in the betting interval, and continues until all players have either called or folded. The bets are made in clockwise order, and players must match the last bet to call or raise.

Bet Limits

Each bet is limited to the number of chips in the pot at that time. A player may raise by a larger amount if they have more chips than the previous betor, and the other players must match the bet.

A player can also check if no one has made a bet in that betting interval, and the other players must call or fold. If all players check, the betting interval ends and the player with the highest-ranking poker combination in his faceup cards wins the pot.
