People like thomas jefferson and benjamin franklin saw great usefulness in them, and the Continental Congress in 1776 authorized a series of state lotteries to raise money for the revolutionary war.<\/p>\n
The odds against winning the lottery are quite high, but people continue to play because they have this meritocratic belief that they’re going to win someday. In fact, people in the United States spent more than $100 billion on lottery tickets in 2021, making it the most popular form of gambling in the country.
