Poker is a card game in which players wager on the outcome of the hand. The game may vary in complexity from one variant to the next but the underlying skill of minimizing losses with bad hands and maximizing winnings with good ones remains the same.<\/p>\n
Before the cards are dealt, a player is usually required to place an initial contribution into the pot, called an ante or blind bet. The dealer then shuffles the deck and deals each player three cards face up, starting with the player to his or her immediate left. The players then take turns betting on their own hands.<\/p>\n
After a number of rounds, the remaining players participate in a showdown, in which they reveal their cards and determine the winner. During the showdown, players may also raise their bets by announcing their intention to do so, which is known as bluffing.<\/p>\n
Unlike some other card games, Poker is almost always played using poker chips. The values of these chips are determined by the game rules and they are exchanged for cash in front of the dealers. Players are often required to purchase a certain amount of chips at the start of the game, and they may be exchanged for higher-value chips at any time during the course of the game. These higher-value chips are called \u201craising chips.\u201d If a player raises a bet by a raising chip, the original bet amount is increased and all players who have not folded must call the new bet.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
