The Risks and Protective Factors of Online Gambling
Online Gambling allows gamblers to place wagers without travelling to a physical casino. This type of gambling can be done from a desktop computer, mobile phone or tablet and is accessible 24/7. It also offers a broader selection of banking options than physical casinos. This convenience can be addictive, especially when a person has the option to play at multiple sites and is not limited by opening hours.
Another benefit of online gambling is that it provides an opportunity to socialise with friends. This is often more convenient than travelling to a casino which can be a long drive for some people. It also offers the opportunity for more people to participate in games like poker or blackjack. Many social groups organize special gambling trips and some even have their own private rooms where they can play together.
However, despite these benefits, online gambling can lead to problems such as increased debt, disrupted relationships and withdrawal symptoms when someone attempts to stop. Gambling-related problems can also result in depression, anxiety and other mental health issues. This is why it is important to seek help if you feel that you may have a problem.
This paper synthesises knowledge about risk and protective factors for gambling in the general population. The research was conducted using a systematic literature search and is based on cross-sectional studies. It is suggested that future research should use longitudinal designs to achieve a better understanding of the association between variables.
