Lose Weight the Healthy Way :)

My usual breakfast:

My usual breakfast:

  • 2 pieces of rice toast with a smidge of butter, banana, a few almonds
    or….
  • Oatmeal with added ground flax seed for omega 3 and protein, small orange
  • *A lowfat omelet or cooked eggs of any sort would be best as you need that protein, but eggs gross me out…

My usual lunch:

  • Wendy’s grilled chicken sandwich with no dressing (is really yummy!), grape tomatoes, string cheese
    or….
  • Salad with chunks of rotisserie chicken on top and little bit of ranch dressing,  apple
    or…..
  • Asian chicken salad made with cabbage and carrots, mixed nuts, sugar free jello cup

My usual dinner:

  • Baked or grilled chicken, roasted red potatoes, grilled zucchini
    or….
  • Broiled tilapia,  seasoned brown rice, corn on the cob
    or….
  • Italian bean soup (like Olive Garden’s but without the pasta noodles in it),  Caesar salad

3 Snack Meal Ideas:

  • String cheese
  • Grape tomatoes
  • Mixed nuts
  • Snap Peas
  • Broccoli with little ranch dressing
  • Any fruit
  • Protein Bar (make sure there’s not much sugar though)

*Since I’m crazy busy (like many of you too!),  I found that eating the same thing for breakfast and lunch each day for a couple weeks was easier for me to stick to as I didn’t have to think of what I was going to eat.

*Also, I make it a routine every day to hit the gym the same time so it becomes a habit- just like part of the normal work day.  There’s no questioning for me as I know it’s just part of my day…

Hope that helps some of you!  We can lose weight together, k? :)
LOTS of love,  Marlena

So I loved this video. Small steps…really gets me thinking that’s why I’ve failed! Gonna cut out the pop! Any tips for when cravings hit?

    • Bbrowning09

i cut out pop and it was so hard since i was addicted to pepsi and mountain dew. the best way to cut it out is to simply not have it in ur house at all! then when u get cravings get a nice tea that u enjoy or a light juice, this trains ur body to crave tea an juice instead of pop it will take a few weeks but it works! hope this help u :)

      • Whitelotus_111

Even ice tea and juice are high in sugar. Just drink water or if you can’t bear it, make home-made tea.

  • Camomille

You are such a beautiful person, Marlena, even at your heaviest, there in the photo, you look good. And it`s not only look, you project so much kindness it is impossible not to like you. Keep on doing what you do, you`re the best

  • Tifnnguyen

Thank you so much for the tips!  I’ve already put some of these into play (I love string cheese now!) but you can always learn more and this has given me some easy ideas.  Thanks again, you’re a great inspiration for me.

I am starting Mark Sisson’s Primal Blueprint lifestyle just now and after looking into it for weeks I find that it is probably the healthiest, easiest way. You really do not have to starve yoursef or work out every day (I know it sounds crazy) and at first glance it looks like it’s just too good to be true, but I really encourage everyone to have a look at http://www.marksdailyapple.com to see how carbs and overexercising stands in the way of weightloss and healthy bodycomposition that is just lean muscle. I just read his book and it’s very logical with lots of scientific data, please please have a look everyone, it will make your life so much easier. (I am not affiliated to Mark or his company or anything, I just really believe in his lifestyle) xoxo

I like your meals ideas and tips…but you should not only stress portion sizes…It’s also important to consider the quality of your food!! I think you look great!! It’s just a consideration…

    • Hannah

Aaah I didn’t mean for that to sound snide…I think it’s a tremendous accomplishment to lose as much weight as you did. I just think being healthy comes with eating healthy…and the right amount of calories in addition to good quality is important! Anyway, congrats Marlena!

    Marlena,
I’m so excited that you’re devoting a segment to your weight loss. Myself personally, having struggled with weight my entire life, I always found makeup to be the only thing that truly fit. :) You are at my goal weight, thank you for being such a down to earth inspiration!

  • chimberly

Thank you for the tips I can’t wait to start this diet!

  • Sheila

Marlena! I want to congratulate you on all your weight loss! I think you give great tips, I just wish I could follow a plan similar to yours, but I’m vegetarian! My problem, personally, is that I’m not eating the right things. I eat a LOT of starches, mainly noodles, pasta, and bread, since my university doesn’t offer a whole lot of variety for vegetarians :/

another great snack is kale chips.i hate every kind of vegetables but kale has no taste so i got kale at the grocery store one day and i popped it in the oven at 350 for about 15-20 mins but i seasoned it with a little salt and it tasted like potatoe chips! great way to swap out the chips!!!

  • Jennifer L Perkins

Hi everyone. There is a pasta named Dream Fields and it says that the way they process their pasta leaves the carbohydrates as larger molecules so that they are not absorbed quickly and therefore don’t turn to sugar.

It is wonderful. It tastes like normal pasta. So you may want to give it a try.

If you have some great pasta sauce recipes I’d love to hear them. :)

  • Freelee

Unfortunately those high fat, low carb diets are unsustainable and unhealthy for your liver and kidney’s . I suggest you look into a high carb raw vegan lifestyle like I follow for the past 5 years, I’ve lost over 20kgs and never felt better. I struggle to put weight on now. http://www.30bananasaday.com is my website. We have nearly 11,000 members and lots of success stories!

  • Kris

You are so amazing. Thank you for all your videos. I’m tired of being overweight and not being able to be comfortable playing with my 2 young boys at the park or at the swimming pool. Before I had my boys I was 115 lbs. Now almost 5 years later i am 175. Well last month I was 175, today I am down to 162. But I haven’t been able to eat a whole lot because I had my wisdom teeth removed a couple weeks ago. But I look at it as away to jump start my journey. Now I have been watching your videos and they are so inspiring. So thank you for putting yourself out there and showing everyone it is possible. You are the best. :)

Hi Marlena, just saw your video about your weight loss journey, and i am so thankful that  you share that with all of us. It takes determination to loose the extra pounds, but what I truly loved about this, is that you are doing it one step at a time. Exercise, lots of water and a good eating plan is the best way to do it, A big hug and  hope you reach your goal. Thank you so much

Here are some tips from a skinny girl:
-Don’t grocery shop often. And when you do, make sure you’re full before you go, and don’t go through the isles, stick to the outer walls of the store.-Don’t snack on anything. You don’t need to be eating constantly.-Don’t drink juice or anything that is colourful. Just stick to water and home made tea, or if you’re really keen on being healthy/energetic, buy a juicer and put in all kinds of veggies (spinach, celery, carrot) and green apples. Stay away from starbucks!-Put in just enough on your plate in the kitchen. Don’t bring the pot or refills on the table.-Be lazy about visiting the fridge. I think this one’s a toughy. Or, just don’t have any packaged foods in your fridge.-Get off Italian food asap. Italian food is made for Italians living in Italy–not compatible with North American lifestyle where walking is not a part of our daily life.-Don’t set goals. Make promises instead. Promise yourself to take care of yourself, not just for yourself, but for the ones you love too. Goals are too difficult to keep. Promises are more personal.-Don’t put a mountain on your plate. Eat till you’re 3/4 full. And when you eat, always check-in with yourself “Am I full now?” if not, throw out the rest, or store it in the fridge for work tomorrow.-Walk around your neighbourhood…you might meet a hottie or connect with a friend!-You don’t need to eat anything when watching TV/movie/browsing the internet…This is the number one sign that you’re abusing yourself.-Browse Youtube for good recipes. They don’t have to be low fat since you’re not going to be eating that often. I suggest looking for ethnic foods from Morocco, India, and Lebanon (all of which are extremely healthy and tasty). Make them at home so you can see and control the baddies like salt/sugar/fats.And that’s all I pretty much do to maintain my 110 pound body. I seriously don’t understand why people need to eat so often (I see it at work all the time)…eating is not a hobby or a pass-time. You eat because you’re hungry, not because you’re bored or feeling down…Hope this helps!

  • Marciaajoseph

Wow Marlena, thank you for being an inspiration to me and so many other women out there that struggle with their weight.

You have done such a great job!  Thank you for being an inspiration, and I’ve already bookmarked this site to help with my own weight loss journey!

  • Jenmcp84

Hey Marlena! I was just wondering if you could do a video or blog about what helped and motivated you to make the decision to lose weight. It’s a big task to tackle for me and always has been. I keep falling off of the wagon. Love Ya!

  • Murenne

I just fell upon your site through makeupgeek. I am 28yo and currently @ 332lbs @ 5’6. I have always been the biggest one within my family, my group of friends, and in any room, but I used to carry it well. I was still very active (I love to dance)! But lately I can only dance for like 3-4 minutes (1 song) and my legs and feet feel like they are on fire, my ankles are swollen, I’m sweating like I just took a dip in a pool, and I am gasping for air! It’s embarrassing and disgusting! The weight is now a burden for me! It’s deteriorating my health and is adding to my depression! I need help! All of my doctors have given up on running tests and trying to figure out what’s wrong with me with my different health issues… their answer for everything is that “You’re too fat! You need to lose weight! You’re killing yourself! And because of how big you’ve gotten… you can no longer lose weight on your own, you need surgery and you need it ASAP!” When my doctors give me a prescription… it’s not for meds, it’s the name and number of a bariatric surgeon! (How embarrassing!) Well I’m afraid of getting surgery! Your blogs on your weightloss journey seems difficult (I love soda~Coke, candy, and chips), but possible. So wish me luck! Please keep posting details to your journey, your recipes, etc. You’ve given me the much needed motivation and inspiration! Thank you! I really appreciate you and your postings!
