Life in Paris: Day 1

Thursday, March 29th

Bonjour lovelies!!!

We finally made it to Paris!  I cannot believe that after 4 years of trying to get here, it’s finally happening.  I’m so nervous that I cannot sleep the entire flight (although Nicola caught some z’s…. Not that I’m bitter ;) )

The first thing we did was get our new sim cards into our phones! We needed to get a hold of Nina, a friend that was to meet us at the airport. Let me just say that I have no idea what would have become of us if Nina had not been there to help us out. Nina picked us up and our four MASSIVE bags of luggage , managed to fit us and all our cargo into her car, and drove us to our apartment where we were met by our landlord.

Luckily our landord spoke some English so we could understand her but once again, thankfully Nina was here to help iron out the final details of the apartment. Once we were settled in, and by settled in I mean once we had dropped our bags in our rooms, we went for some lunch at an adorable cafe. The streets here are filled with cafes that have seats all on the sidewalks.  Parisians sit and enjoy their meals with no cell phones and watch people pass by.  It’s such a huge difference from back home- life here is far more relaxed.

After our lunch we decided to walk around the neighborhood some more, soaking up the culture and enjoying the atmosphere. By this point we already were planning on how we could move here- haha.

We went to Sacré Coeur de Montmartre, a beautiful Catholic church with an amazing view of the city.  We got kicked out because I was taking pictures- whoops!  Nothing like starting off a trip to Paris with getting kicked out of a church…

After 32 hours of no sleep and walking for 4 hours, we headed to our new favorite store:  Monoprix!  It’s the Paris version of Target :) (And you all know how much I love Target. haha) Let me just say, it’s a big fat pain in the butt trying to find where the milk or garbage bags are when you don’t understand much French. (we’re learning quick though!) So… we spent what seemed like half a day buying some necessities for the apartment. Can’t say we have everything but at least we have coffee and crackers (I think that’s what they were)

Off to bed before we pass out!

Beaucoup d’amour,

Nicola and Marlena :)

The simple way is always better! I wouldn’t blame you if you stayed…although you would definitely be missed!

  • Mariel

You two look gorgeous and Paris looks amazing! You have to post some videos of Paris! I love Nicola…she is the best photographer!!

    • Nicola

Oh thanks Mariel, you are so sweet :)

  • Thegallantlady

Marlena, I’m not sure what kind of phone you’re using but if you have one that can download apps, the Accio French/English dictionary is a good one for simple translation (& it can switch between French–>English & English–>French). If anything, it might just be helpful if you need to translate a word from a menu or something from Monoprix. Have fun and be safe!

How long are you staying in Paris?
As a french girl, I love all your stories about Paris because it sounds so funny to me (like I always wear a scarf but I never realised it was “french style”!)

You absolutely have to try lunch or dinner in “le paradis du fruit” , there are many restaurants of this brand in Paris ;it’s the best price/quality in Paris with little angels and devils drawn on the menu by the side of each course so you know if it is low calories or not!! and it is very good and not expensive!

(i dont work for them ;-)

and for french beauty stuff you have to go to city-pharma

26 Rue du Four, 75006 Paris
it is the cheapest pharmacy which sells all french brand(vichy, avene, bioderma….)

    have fun

  • Andreanne O

I went to Paris once and sigh, I wanna go back!!
I still remember Montmartre and Sacré Coeur, what a great place.
One of my favourite place in Paris, as well as the Opera.

I’m a french canadian so I didn’t have a lot of trouble, but something with the accents, I had a really tough time to understand everything ahahah.

And I’m wondering how you could go back to the States after 5 weeks in Paris. I can tell you that I had difficulties to leave after 4 days ahahah.

  • Heather

Have a wonderful time in Paris! Thanks for the updates, and let us know all the juicy details. *wink*

I wish I could smell it! To me things are so much better by the way they smell :) I would definitely recommend an ap that would translate for you so you aren’t using all of your data up on looking up translations.

  • MR DETERMINED

So exciting! I was in Paris last Fall and it was so nice. You are going to love it! Considering you have been up for 32 hours, that is a cute Metro picture of the two of you.

  • Contact ModernGirl

    Welcome to Paris guys !
I’m sure you will love the city.
Hope we can meet one day ;)

  • Soa

Soooo… What about the smell dans le metro? xD Haha!

  • Thalie

As a Parisian, I feel so happy reading your enthusiasm ! Hope my fellow French people won’t disappoint you.
If you live in the Montmartre area, I advise you to go to the Cul De Poule restaurant, it is on the wonderful Rue des Martyrs (subway station Pigalle). They have a menu written in English, and the food is amazing without being too expensive. It is a very Parisian restaurant in my opinion.

I can’t wait to read more on your trip. Enjoy your time here, I can’t help but feeling very happy that you’re almost my neighbor !

  • Faishah_4u

    Bonjour les filles !

Monoprix ! yeahhh ! you’re so right ! By the way : Garbage bag = sac poubelle.
I’m so glad you enjoy your stay in the City. What neighborhood do you live in ?

If you have some time left, and want to visit le Quartier Latin, go to St Germain de près, Café de Flore, Ladurée, L’ile de la Cité… it’s worth it for beautiful photos of Paris.

Have you tried a french croissant ?
